Pocenia
An itinerary between nature and water
In Pocenia you will find the municipal park of the Stella and Torsa rivers, an area of approximately 334 hectares which can be visited by foot or bicycle through its cycle and pedestrian paths. Around 200 species of birds have been found in these landscapes, where every corner offers unique views.
Historical notes
The origin of the town of Pocenia, presumed by the theory of its toponym ‘Pulcinia’, coming from the Latin female name of ‘Pulcinuis’, dates back to Roman times when a local fishing village was established along the banks of the Stella River. Some say that the name of the town derives from a more modern Friulian term: ‘puc e nuie’, translated as ‘little and nothing’, which would refer to its previously scarce population.
In 1815, the Congress of Vienna sanctioned the definitive union of Veneto and Friuli with Austrian Lombardy, constituting the Lombardo-Venetian Kingdom. During this time, and more precisely in 1822, Pocenia was recognized as a third-class municipality, that is a municipality without its own office, but dependent on that of Latisana which constituted the tenth territorial district of the province of Udine.
The landowners assembly of the municipality constituted the Convocato Generale, which was the only representative body at the time. In 1866 Pocenia became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Santa Maria Annunziata
The church in the Paradiso fraction of Pocenia is characterized by an unusual circular plan. It was built in the 17th century and consecrated in 1689, as reported by the epigraph on the external portal. In 1959 the church became officially a parish, though it returned to be a branch of the church of Torsa after a few years. On September 7th, 1968 the archbishop of Udine Giuseppe Zaffonato consecrated the new main altar. In 2000, the church was restored.

Stella River
The unique and uncontaminated nature, swampy areas rich in marshes of extraordinary beauty, and the beautiful parks of the Castle of Flambruzzo and Villa Ottelio Savorgnan in Ariis, touched by its waters, make the Stella an extremely charming river. Once an important artery for transport and connection between the High and Middle Friulian plains and the sea, but also essential for war strategies, today the Stella is one of the most fascinating rivers in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
Torsa river
The Torsa river originates from the confluence of some springs in the homonymous fraction of Torsa in the north of the village, in the municipality of Pocenia and then, after extending for about 6 km it flows into the Stella river. In its initial tract, the Torsa river marks the border between the municipalities of Pocenia and Rivignano Teor.
